The photo booth is the party favor guests actually keep. Done well, it becomes the memory of the night — the strip on the fridge, the group text the next morning. Done poorly, it is a sad DSLR on a tripod in the corner. Here is how to book one that guests actually use.

Open-air vs enclosed: pick open-air

Enclosed booths are the classic mall photo booth — a curtained box that seats two to four. They are nostalgic but limit group size and take up more floor space.

Open-air booths are a camera, a light, and a backdrop. They handle groups of ten or more, guests can see themselves posing, and the setups photograph beautifully into the room. For weddings and corporate events, open-air is the modern default.

Prints, digital, or both — always both

Unlimited on-site 2x6 strip prints are the single most important feature. Guests take one home, leave one for the couple, and the physical print is what ends up on fridges and cubicle walls a year later.

Digital delivery — text, email, or QR code — extends the moment onto social media and gives guests a full-resolution version. Every modern booth should include both.

The attendant is not optional

Unattended booths break. Batteries die, prints jam, guests do not know the camera counted down. A live attendant runs the booth, curates the prop table, keeps the line moving, and troubleshoots on the fly.

The attendant is also the person who invites the shy grandparent to jump in. That is worth the rental fee alone.

Backdrops and custom templates

Sequin, floral, and velvet backdrops are the current bestsellers. Custom-branded backdrops are standard for corporate activations and brand launches — send the vendor your logo and event colors two weeks out.

Every print template should be customized with names, date, hashtag, or logo. Generic templates look cheap; custom templates take fifteen minutes to design and elevate the whole experience.

How many hours to book

Three hours is the sweet spot for most weddings and parties — enough for cocktail hour and the first half of the reception, when guests are most likely to line up. Four hours makes sense for larger events over 200 guests.

Skip the last hour of the night. By then guests are dancing and the booth sits empty.

Space and power requirements

Open-air booths need roughly 8x8 feet of floor space and a standard 120V power outlet within twenty feet. Outdoor setups need a shaded spot or a tent — direct sun blows out the exposure and afternoon heat is brutal on the printer.

Send the vendor a photo of the intended spot before the event. They will spot problems you would not.
